Local Area Network data sheet

Introduction and sponsors
In this section we're going to explain the technical characteristics of the local area network we'll have in Euskal 8. As in previous years, Euskaltel will provide Internet conection as well as routers and cables. Additonaly, this year we'll have 3COM sponsorship, that is going to provide us with network interconection elements that we'll use to build the party network infraestructure.

Local area network general description

The net will be composed of various interconection elements (hubs and switches) from 3Com. Each table will have an element with the necessary plugs to connect all the computers to it, and an uplink cable for the connection with the central switches. All the elements are models from the Super Stack II series, 3Com's professional serie. Looking at the table's elements, we'll have mostly Super Stack II 500 Dual Speed 10/100 hubs and Super Stack II 1100 at 10 mbit with uplink at 100 mbit switches. It is remarkable that not all the elements that we'll have are from those models (almost all are), but they all are from the Super Stack II series. Here you have two diagrams of the hubs and switches that we'll generally use in the tables.

Super Stack II 500 Dual Speed Hub

Super Stack II 1100 Switch

As you could guess, the network speed will be 100Mbit/s in the hubs and 10Mbit in the switches, with a 100Mbit uplink connection. It is remarkable that in practice higher speed is attained with 10 Mbit switches than with 100 Mbit hubs, as the later are repetitors and the switches are conmutators and there is no speed lose in them. In other means, with a switch is you're going 10 Mbit, you're really going 10 Mbit no matter how many computers are connected to it. But in the hubs, all the hub runs at 100 Mbit, and if there are 20 computers connected to it the speed gets divided: 100/20= = 5 mbit/s. In any case, we believe that current year's network will be outstanding, as we have high quality elements.

For the central connection, all the table elements will be connected to a bank of 3COM Super Stack II 3300 with 24 ports 10/100. Here you have some diagrams.

Internet access description

As in the previous years, Euskaltel will be our Internet provider, this year as the event organizer. Will have a Frame Relay conection with 3 MB CIR, in other words, we have GUARANTEED an Internet accessm with a minimun flow 3MB that can grow to the maximun speed of the connection. In a connection the important thing isn't the line speed (that can be 34 Mb perfectly) but the minimun guaranteed flow, that in our case is 3 Mb. It is of no use to have a 34 Mbit/s line if only 128Kbit/s is guaranteed. Click here to see a comunications' diagram.

As this year we're going to have a connection with our "delegation" in Gipuzkoa (placed at Kursaal), we'll have also ISDN connections with San Sebastian to transmit with real time video all that is happening in Bilbao. Party servers' description
This year Compaq will provide us with the servers that we'll use in Euskal. Compaq will provide us 2 servers of the Proliant series as well as some Deskpro series workstations. Those servers will be used for Euskal's intranet, as game servers, and in the conferences.
